There was a time when kids could trust that the world of adults was in good hands… managed by people who had matured into relatively wise grown ups who thought about what they said, said what the meant, and treated each other more-or-less with respect. Or at least adults who practiced civil behaviour toward each other in public, and who kept their darker more private thoughts to themselves and shared them only with friends and confidents behind closed doors.
But lately that world of grownups seems to have been pushed aside by the world of the child-adult, with its disdain for honesty, fairness, logic, and civility. We are witnessing the rise of the “kidult” state, led and populated by people who, for whatever reasons, never fully matured, and who act with all the infantile illogic and petty unreasonableness of children. And this could prove to be destructive for the United States.
I have a few observations to make about this troubling trend.
